An Intro and an Update

Movies Like Rory in 2025

Hello constant reader! As I enter my third year of running this newsletter I figured it was time for an introduction to any readers I’ve picked up along the way.

My name is Rory Dunn. I’m a stand up comedian currently based in Vancouver, British Columbia, with plans on relocating to Auckland New Zealand at the end of this year. Along with watching and writing about film I enjoy writing short form horror, I participate in strongman competitions, and I am currently studying French and Galeilge.

When it comes to film I have very broad tastes. My favourite directors include the Coen Brothers, Richard Linklater, David Lynch, Spike Lee, and Debra Granik. I’ve charted many of my favourite films in my ongoing essay series The Favourites, with my favourite of all time being Paris, Texas. I love world cinema, old Hollywood, indie films, big budget Hollywood hits, silly comedies, and deep romances. I can love any film, and I believe any film can lead to a healthy and thorough discussion

I bring up The Favourites as it is the center of the update. As of now this series has been exclusively for those who support me financially. Moving forward that will no longer be the case, for one simple reason: I put a lot of work into my writing, and am proud of the work I do. As such, I want as many people as possible to enjoy it as well. As of now all past and future editions of The Favourites are free to read

Moving forward I will be updating my release schedule. I’ve tried to release three newsletters a month, and for the most part have accomplished this, but I feel it is limiting me in other areas. Thus, moving forward I will guarantee my monthly round-up of all the films I watched the previous month, while releasing one other essay a month. Some I will be able to produce more, but I will not be guaranteeing three a month. Hopefully this will allow me to continue with the quality of my work while allowing me more time to pursue other writing opportunities, whether those be my comedy writing, my short stories, or others.

If you choose to continue to support me with a monthly or yearly membership, your support will always be held dearly. I started this newsletter as a away to explore my love of cinema more, and I hope it allows you to further your love of the art as well.
